Jaime Lannister
Kingslayer. Oathbreaker. Man Without Honor.

A boy knelt; a knight rose. The Young Lion, not the Kingslayer. But that was long ago, and the boy was dead.

OVERVIEW
Asshole knight with a heart of gold-plated steel.
He's not very good, but he's trying.
He's got one hand and no chill.
And all his kids are dying.

PERSONALITY
Jaime Lannister is an asshole. He’s arrogant, self-centered, and self-serving. Willing to throw small children out of windows, murder cousins, and strike down anyone who dares to stand between him and what he wants. And what’s more, he’ll enjoy it. He loves a good fight. He’s got a sharp tongue too, and he isn’t above using words to wound either. He’s ruthless, callous, violent. He is, in short, not a nice guy.

Not when anyone’s looking, anyway. But underneath that simple, self-serving asshole, there is a man of far greater depth and complexity. One who actually cares about other people, who has compassion - not only for his fellow man, but for women as well, which is especially remarkable given the unabashedly misogynistic environment from which he comes.

Deep down, he’s the kind of guy who will try to keep you from getting raped and murdered, who will fight a bear - one handed - for you, who will promise to find your daughters for you, even though you’re sort of the enemy and he’s only promising because he finds the idea of the oathbreaker actually keeping an oath to be incredibly amusing. He may not always have the best and most noble reasons for doing good things, but he does do good things. Sometimes.

His behavior does not make him a likeable person. Maybe it doesn’t make him a good person. But it does make him a capable person. Jaime Lannister is the rare sort of person who can and will do whatever needs to be done, regardless of the consequences. He’s the kind of guy who will kill a king and save half a million lives, destroying his reputation in the process, and never even try to defend himself after the fact, because his honor is not what matters.

He tells his father, at one point, that he doesn’t care what people think of him. That’s a lie. He does care. He just doesn’t want anyone to know that he cares. He’s got a reputation to maintain, after all. He’s a Lannister. A lion, who does not concern himself with the opinions of sheep. But when he lets his guard down a little, when anything happens to impair his judgment - such as when Catelyn Stark gets him drunk or his infected right arm leaves him fever-addled - and he forgets that he’s not supposed to care, he tends to trot down memory lane, pointing out justifications for what is largely viewed as the worst of his deeds in an almost desperate bid to be understood.

Jaime is very much a product of his circumstances. He was raised by a man who is far more ruthless than he could ever be, and the only woman he’s ever loved is a callous creature who loves no one more than herself. He served a mad king whose greatest joy was torturing his foes, and he served with men he once admired, whose best advice was to turn a blind eye to such injustice because the king can do what he likes. For all intents and purposes, he’s been trained to be precisely the sort of man he is on the surface. But there’s a certain sense of justice in him that rails against it all.

He is conflicted to his very core. Fortunately, he thrives on conflict.
